For the 2nd Week of Advent - Cycle C

A reading from the gospel of Jesus according to Matthew (first reader only)

JOHN THE BAPTIST APPEARED, PREACHING IN THE DESERT./

HE WAS BAPTISING PEOPLE FROM THE WHOLE REGION AROUND THE JORDAN /

AS THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THEIR SINS./

PART OF HIS MESSAGE WAS,”PRODUCE GOOD FRUIT AS EVIDENCE OF YOUR REPENTENCE./

EVERY TREE THAT DOES NOT BEAR GOOD FRUIT WILL BE CUT DOWN AND THROWN INTO THE FIRE./

I AM BAPTISING YOU WITH WATER, FOR REPENTENCE,/

BUT THE ONE WHO IS COMING AFTER ME IS MIGHTIER THAN I./

I AM NOT WORTHY TO CARRY HIS SANDALS,/

HE WILL BAPTIZE YOU WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AND FIRE./

HE WILL GATHER THE WHEAT INTO HIS BARN,/

BUT THE CHAFF HE WILL BURN WITH UNQUENCHABLE FIRE.”/
